A daybed can double as a sofa and have a storage drawer or trundle bed underneath it for a more efficient use of space. If you have an empty or sparsely furnished room, a day bed can fill up space and give the room functionality.

Even if you don&#;t have many overnight guests, a daybed can add a cozy or elegant vibe to any room. Here are a few things you should look for when buying a daybed.

How Will You Use It?

Daybeds are usually placed in a spare bedroom, home office or in a child&#;s bedroom as an extra bed. A daybed turns any room into a guest bedroom without compromising the functionality of the room when guests aren&#;t around (sewing room, studio, etc.)

A daybed is useful in children&#;s rooms for sleepovers, or as a second bed when several children share a room.

Materials and Design

Daybeds are available in dozens of styles, including Victorian, sleigh, chaise lounge, canopy daybeds for outdoor use, country style (all-wood), Mission style and traditional. Daybed frames often come in painted or stained wood, plain or painted metal or iron. Choose brass, chrome or silver bed frames for a sparse, modern look.

Leather daybeds are more expensive, but they lend an aura of luxury to any room. Wicker daybeds can be used outdoors or in enclosed porches, or in any room with a tropical motif.

A masculine-looking daybed for a bachelor apartment or boys&#; room may be made of dark or stained wood and have storage drawers underneath for clothing. The drawers might have bronze pulls to add a touch of class. A vintage daybed with a curved frame and adorned with bright throw pillows fit for a princess is an excellent choice for a girl&#;s or woman&#;s bedroom.

Trundle Beds

A trundle hidden underneath a daybed reveals a second bed, and the second bed is stored after use to save space for daily activities. A trundled bed is a pull-out bed with casters. You can lift the trundle to the same height as the bed or leave it on the ground. You can also create a queen-size bed by rolling the trundle bed next to the daybed.

A trundle, or second mattress frame, can be stored underneath a daybed with a link spring. You can slide out the mattress when you need another bed. Trundles come in pop-up or drawer versions. Pop-up trundle beds, the most popular type are made of metal and you can leave them in an elevated or lowered position.

Drawer trundles slide out like a desk drawer and are made exclusively for a particular bed. They hold a twin-size mattress and remain in a lowered position. You can use a slide-out trundle for storage if you don&#;t need a second mattress.

Mattresses and Frames

Daybeds are usually twin size and use twin mattresses, even though their function is different than a regular bed. Link springs or wood slats provide support for the mattresses. Find a mattress that&#;s firm enough or soft enough for your needs. If you have lots of overnight guests, but the best quality mattress you can afford.

A daybed is comprised of a frame, mattress, mattress support and occasionally a trundle. A daybed frame has two side panels and a back panel. Daybed frames are typically used with a 39 inch by 75-inch twin mattress. Double and queen mattress daybeds are available, but less common.

A link spring, a metal grid of springs, is the most common mattress support for daybeds. The springs replace the box springs used in larger beds. The link spring connects the two side panels to hold the mattress. The link spring makes it possible for you to store a trundle bed and second mattress if you wish.

A slat system consists of wooden slats attached to the front and back rails of the bed to hold the mattress.

Bedding

Use twin size sheets and pillows with your daybed, and add throws and decorative pillows if the bed will be used for lounging during the day. You&#;ll find a small gap between the sides of the bed and the mattress that allows you to put a blanket and sheets on the bed. For a frilly look in a girls&#; bedroom use three shams, a comforter and bed skirt. A daybed comforter is 62 inches wide by 86 inches long, while a twin bed comforter is 52 inches wide by 99 inches long.

Complete your daybed look with a fitted cover instead of sheets if the mattress will be used as a sofa most of the time. A tightly-fitted, tailored cover is preferable, and you can choose from many colors and patterns. The fabric cover rests on top of the mattress and covers the top to the ground on all three front sides.

Storage and Surrounding Space

Like captains&#; beds, daybeds can have storage compartments underneath to help keep your home tidy. A daybed with storage drawers is essential if you live in a small apartment, have several children sharing a room, or want to keep your home tidier without renting an outside storage space.

If your daybed is placed on a tile or hardwood floor, place an area rug underneath it, to the side, or in front of it, to keep your guest&#;s feet warm when he or she gets out of bed. A light blue vintage rug works in most spaces without overwhelming surrounding décor. A warmer sheepskin or plush shag rug will warm feet even more on cold mornings.
