What do you do with the "lengthy surveys" when you receive them? Are they carefully reviewed and followed up on, or are they simply filed and checked off a list as complete? Many of our customers send me these lengthy questionnaires (even though we ARE REGISTERED) which I am certain are filed without review - because I'll throw the occasional goofy answer in just to see if they're paying attention - and I've never heard a word back (til next year).
If it is important to you that your NEW supplier has an effective QMS, AUDIT THEM! Ask questions based on what is important to YOU (e.g. how complaints are handled, how on-time delivery is ensured, how do they react to changes, etc.). After you choose a supplier, based on solid qualifications (e.g. results of your audit, acceptance of their claims of certification/compliance, recommendation from other buyers, etc.) then bother them again ONLY when there are concerns to be resolved. If problems become big or repetitive, THEN audit them again (or remove them from your list). Whatever the case, don't audit them annually by rote!
