Chapter 1: What is Stainless Steel Filter Housing?

It is an enclosed vessel or &#;container,&#; made from stainless steel material, which hosts filter element and other components.

It helps to remove contaminants from fluid systems.

It houses filter components such as filter cartridges, bags, and even strainer baskets.

Furthermore, it has a pressure gauge that indicates the working pressure during the filtration process.

Normally, the construction of stainless steel filter housing is such that it withstands all the fluid conditions.

It includes both the inlet contaminated fluid to the outlet filtered fluid.

Stainless steel duplex filter housing

For these filters, the primary material is SS 304 or SS 316.

I will walk you through the fundamental aspects about SS 304 and 316, keep reading.

Normally, manufacturers choose stainless steel grades since they can work with the chemical composition of different fluids and resistant to different forms of attacks.

Chapter 2: Advantages of Stainless Steel Material for Filter Housing

Filter housing handles different types of contaminants.

Therefore, you must choose the best material for your filter housing.

Over the years, stainless steel material has become a perfect material for most filter housing.

And, in this section, I will walk you through some of the main advantages of stainless steel material for filter housing.

a) They are Corrosion Resistant

The stainless steel exhibits high resistance to corrosion.

Therefore, it can withstand attack in most of the conditions.

Low alloy stainless steel will resist corrosion in any atmospheric conditions.

On the other hand, high alloy stainless steel resists corrosion at elevated pressures and temperatures.

It makes stainless steel filter housing suitable for acidic, alkaline solutions and even chloride environments.

b) Exhibits High and Low-Temperature Resistance

Grades of stainless steel can resist scaling and can maintain its high strength when exposed to very high temperature.

It also tends to show toughness at cryogenic temperatures.

c) Exhibit Long Life Cycle Properties

It is durable and has low maintenance since it is not prone to corrosion attack.

You can use stainless steel filter housing for a long period.

d) Smooth Surface Finish

Making filter housing requires that the surface should be smooth and slippery.

This will prevent dirt from sticking to the surface.

Stainless steel has this quality, and hence it is best used for many applications in piping systems.

e) It is Easy to Fabricate

You can form stainless steel into virtually any shape.

Therefore, you can make stainless steel filter housing with different designs and shapes.

It is easier to cut, weld, machine or form into any shape.

Thus, the fabrication process is easy and simple.

f) It has High Aesthetic Appearance

Stainless steel filter housing looks shiny.

Its surface looks bright always which adds beauty to the piping system.

Stainless Steel Exists in Different Compositions

Stainless steel used in making filter housing is of two grade types namely;

  • 304 stainless steel
  • 316 stainless steel

They have different chemical compositions.

Remember, you can use stainless steel to make filter housing just like other material.

Below is a video showing duplex filters whose housings are made from other materials:

Let&#;s have a quick comparison between the 304 and 316 stainless steel.

· Alloying Elements in SS 304 and SS 316

SS 304 is composed of 18% chromium and 8% nickel.

On the other hand, SS 316 has 10% nickel, 2% molybdenum and 16% chromium.

Molybdenum makes stainless steel corrosion resistant.

· Practical Functionality and Applications of SS 304 vs. SS 316

Type 304 stainless steel can resist oxidation and corrosion as well.

They can work well in the presence of oxygen at high temperatures.

You can easily fabricate it to have a good surface finish.

It is common in many applications such as making tanks, pressure vessels, tubing, piping and filter housing.

SS 316 is heat resistant owing to its chemical composition.

It also has high corrosion resistance on exposure to many chemical solutions.

Of course, this is due to the chromium-nickel elements.

Please note this:

Since SS316 stainless steel alloy has molybdenum, it exhibits considerable more resistant to chemical attack than SS304.

Type 316 stainless steel is long-lasting (durable), and you can easily fabricate, clean, weld or improve the finish.

It is considerably more resistant to solutions of sulfuric acid, chlorides, bromides, iodides and fatty acids at high temperature.

Stainless steels having molybdenum are a perfect choice for many applications in the pharmaceutical industry.

It reduces possible metallic contamination.

Other special types of stainless steel are also available, especially those that can resist corrosion of salty water.

UNS S, for example, is known to have high impact strength at zero temperature and displays excellent corrosion resistance.

It is cost effective and contains elements of:

  • 25% chromium
  • 7% nickel
  • 6% molybdenum
  • Copper
  • Tungsten

UNS S can be used in desalination plants, seawater systems, etc.

So, what&#;s the bottom line here?

Stainless steel filter housings are superior accessories you can count on in any piping system.

With these, you don&#;t have to worry about any possible downtime and extra costs due to corrosion or contamination.

It&#;s because the filter modules can simply be back flushed and re-used many times before replacing with new ones.

The maximum operating temperature of the lenticular filter housing is 284 Degrees Farads or 140 Degrees Celsius.

While the maximum operating pressure of 159 psi or 10 bars liquid pressure.

With these operating parameters, the standard gasket material is silicon.

iii. Sock Filter Housing

Sock filter housing come in different designs and sizes for varying fluid handling capabilities.

They resemble the bag filter housing in their design.

In most cases, these housings are designed alongside the filter bags.

After the manufacturing process, the whole filtration system is tested for filtration efficiency and any compatibility.

The design allows the bag/sock bag filter to work with a wide range of fluid flow rates.

Remember, in industrial setups, the flow rates tend to fluctuate.

Of course, the pressure rating of the sock filter housing also varies depending on the design and type of application.

Stainless steel filter housing

The pressure ratings vary, but every standard design must have a pressure rating indicated on the name plates with the ASME code stamps.

However, the safety standards must conform to the international requirements.

3.5 Stainless Steel Duplex Filter Housing

The design of stainless steel duplex filter housing is to guarantee continuous operation even in the most adverse piping systems.

That is, you don&#;t have to worry about downtime for replacing and cleaning elements on the duplex filter housing.

Stainless steel duplex filter housing has two stainless steel filter housings with three way changeover valve (can be ball valve or butterfly valve) between them.

This ensures flexibility in the operation.

Stainless steel duplex filter housing

With this design, you can easily switch from the dirty filter housing to clean one.

You can learn how this system works here: Duplex Filter and Strainer: The Ultimate Buying Guide.

At the same time, you will service the dirty filter housing.

Basically, this implies that you will have an uninterrupted flow.

With the SS316 and SS304 structure, these stainless steel duplex filter housings are rust resistant.

Even dirt cannot adhere to their surfaces.

Whenever you&#;re buying stainless steel duplex filter housing, you should consider the following:

  • Maximum flow rate
  • Material the housing
  • Connection type
  • Filtration accuracy
  • Clogging indicator
  • Dirt holding capacity

Furthermore, the design of duplex filter housing is such that they are easy to overhaul, open, wash and change.

Generally, the assembly is simple.

And the good thing about stainless steel duplex filter housing is that it ensures continuous, steady, robust and maximum filtration process.

Now, let me take you through the technical specifications of duplex filter housing.

· Technical Specifications of a duplex filter housing

Because of different working environment, the technical specifications of the duplex filter housing are important considerations to look into.

A reason why its design specification is such that it holds the filter media material intact with compactness.

With high operating pressure, the filtration system is capable of accommodating the solid materials which are flowing inside the liquid and filter them accordingly.

Here is a sample of duplex filter housing technical data.

S/NOParameterExact Measure1.Flow Rate25 &#; L/min2.Temperature300C &#; C3.Working Pressure&#;2.5 Mpa4.Connection rangeDN20 &#; DN.Pressure Loss&#; 0.35 Mpa6.Filtration3,5,10,20,40,100µm7.Supply Power24/48 W, 220V/50W

Other design parameters include:

i. Duplex Filters

You need duplex filters for the duplex filtration processes. Normally, two units are piped with valves together to allow for the continuous use of the unit.

This means that one unit will be on standby while the other unit is in operation. This reduces possible downtime.

ii. Quick Access Covers

The cover is easy to open and close.

Technical drawing of duplex filter housing

This reduces operating costs and time wasting during changeover.

Of course, this cover meets the ASME standards.

iii. Low Profile Design Housing

The housing should be compact and with good space, making it easier to remove the bag filter elements or cleaning.

It also reduces the working height.

This eliminates the possibility of using ladders or working platforms (they can be a safety hazard).

iv. Spring Assisted Covers

This helps in efficient closing and opening of the covers without a lot of effort.

Once the swing bolts are loose, the cover can easily be lifted to open and stopped by the provided cover stop.

3.6. Inline Stainless Steel Housings

Inline stainless steel housings are suitable in oil&gas applications where servicing requires long servicing intervals and straining particles as small as 5 microns.

Inline filter housing

Inline stainless steel housings are generally used as process filters to protect pumps, pressure reducers and hydraulic circuits from contamination.

They are fitted after the system pump to better protect sensitive components.

Its features make it very unique from other filters.

Some of its features include;

  • 304/316L stainless steel construction
  • Provision of the integral support core
  • Visual/electrical indicator and bypass valve
  • Bolt-on cover plate
  • Connections for venting and draining

With all these features, inline stainless steel housings can be applied even in high pressure or high temperature situations.

Chapter 4: Filter Housing Selection Guide

Before you buy any filter housing, it is important to consider factors that increase its efficiency and reliability.

To have a good filtration process, you need to know the filtering element you&#;ll use.

Remember, it is this element that will sit inside the filter housing.

Now, let&#;s have a quick overview of the main factors to consider when choosing a filter housing:

a) Nature of the Contaminants and medium

It is important to look at the nature of the contaminant and medium before purchasing filter housing.

Some contaminants or medium are corrosive, thus, may react with the material.

Considering the nature of the contaminant during selection will ensure there is compatibility between the contaminant and the material used.

b) Degree of Filtration Needed

Before buying a filtration system, you need to know an estimate size of particulate you intend to remove.

This will not only help you to choose a suitable filter cartridge, but also an appropriate filter housing.

c) Material of Construction

Here, the filter housing is made from stainless steel material.

Where most filter housing manufacturers use either SS 304 or SS 316L.

I hope you remember what I said earlier about these two types of stainless steel material.

Of course, there are filter housings made from different materials such as brass, iron, etc.

However, that&#;s a subject for another day.

d) Cost Effectiveness

In any piping of fluid systems, you should strive to reduce the cost of operation.

These may range from the cost of repair to downtime.

When you choose stainless steel filter housing, it will obviously serve you for years.

Of course, this also goes hand in hand with choosing a suitable type of stainless steel filter housing.

Please, review chapter 3, to choose the best filter housing that will reduce the cost of your operations.

e) Temperature and Pressure Operating Conditions

Temperature and pressure also determine the design and type of stainless steel filter housing.

Remember, the filter housing must work within a specific pressure and temperature.

Basically, filter housing designed to work at a lower temperature will not work at higher temperature conditions.

The same applies to pressure.

f) Inlet and Outlet Connection

The filter housing needs to have a compatible inlet and outlet connections with the existing systems.

Be clear on this configuration when making an order.

g) Other Technical Specifications

You should check every component and material that makes up the filter housing to ensure they meet the set standards.

Technical data

For instance, the O-ring should be silicon material with the entire structure made from stainless steel.

Assess the joints and connection to ensure they meet the correct specifications of your applications.

They should guarantee &#;zero leakage.&#;

Also, as you choose the filter housing, you should pay attention to the bag/sock or filter element and other accessories.

But, why should you do all these?

By considering all these aspects, you&#;ll buy a filter housing that meets the exact specifications of your applications.

Remember, failure to pay attention to these will result in incompatibility issues which can be expensive in the long run.

And this now takes us to yet another important subject &#; what makes up a filter housing?

Parts of Filter Housing

Well, this yet another important subject whenever you&#;re selecting stainless filter housing.

And, as you can remember in chapter 3, I did mention that there are many types of filter housing.

This basically implies the number of parts may also vary.

Parts of  stainless steel filter housing

So here, I will only focus on the main parts and components.

Now, some of the main parts and components of stainless filter housing include:

  • Eye bolt or Swing bolt &#; It helps in quick de-assembly for easy cleaning and servicing.
  • Head and Shell-Is made of 304 stainless steel and is the housing that takes care of all the internal components like the cartridges and pipework. This section also has a pressure gauge.
  • Vent and Drain Plugs- All fabricated from 304 stainless steel
  • Bottom Seat Plates- Fabricated from 316L stainless steel
  • Shell O-ring- which acts as a seal
  • Pressure gauge -This shows the operational pressure at every given time. It acts as part of the filter housing safety measure
  • It also has connection options such which may include flanges and gaskets
  • The filter cartridges are put inside the housing
  • Another safety measure is the release valve for air

As a rule of thumb, always request for the technical manual or data sheet of the stainless steel filter housing.

Here, you will know all parts and components that are unique to the filter housing you&#;re buying.

Now, let&#;s move a step further and have a quick overview on how to replace a filter element.

Chapter 5: Step-by-step Guide How to Replace Elements for a Filter Housing

The design of stainless steel filter housing is such that they can serve you for years.

However, at some point, you will have to replace or clean the filter element.

Remember, it is the filter elements that trap contaminants.

And, it is the filter housing that hosts the filter element.

It doesn&#;t matter whether your stainless steel filter housing hosts:

a) Hydraulic oil filter

Hydraulic oil filters

b) Basket filter element

c) Filter bags

d) Water filter cartridge

Basket filter element

In this section, I will take you through a simple and straightforward process on how to replace a filter element.

Let&#;s dive right in:

Step 1: Opening the Filter Housing

In order to install a filter element, start by removing the element hold down plate by lifting it off the locating pin.

Using a compatible fluid, lubricate the O-ring on the filter open end.

Then carefully slide the closed end of the filter into the perforated cage which is always welded to the tube sheet.

Step 2: Putting the Filter Element in Position

To put the element into its position, press down on the open end of the filter up to the point when the element is in the tube sheet.

This will ensure complete seal between the housing and the filter through the filter O-ring.

During this point, caution should be put in place to ensure the open &#;end cap is below the tube sheet surface.

Step 3: Reinstall and Secure the Cover

After the entire filter cartridges have been installed, ensure you re-install and secure the hold down plate element.

This is ensured by simply guiding the hold down plate element above the locating pins on the tube sheet.

The hold down plate normally prevents the elements from getting dislodged in any event of reverse flow.

To help in the installation and removal of the filter cartridges, a filter tool is normally provided in every housing.

This tool helps to eliminate any attempt by the operator to open the filter vessel to either install the filters or remove them.

Here is a video that gives an overview of the process:

Remember, this is just a brief summary of the process of replacing or installing a filter element.

Normally, the stainless steel filter system manufacturer will outline the entire process in the manual.

So, you should review the manual.

This is because the process may vary depending on the design of the stainless filter housing.

But one thing that I can assure you is that, the process is simple and straight forward.
